Gordon Murray isn’t satisfied with just developing the remarkable T.50 hypercar and has revealed that he will also develop an innovative electrical architecture to be used by small electric vehicles and delivery vans.

Thanks to a £300 million ($423 million) investment, the Gordon Murray Group will create “a highly flexible EV skateboard designed to form the basis of a B-segment vehicle.” Initially, this will be a small SUV that will spawn a delivery van derivative.

Speaking with Autocar, Murray added that the company’s expansion plans will involve its iStream manufacturing principles. It has also been confirmed that Richie Sibal, who has previously worked at McLaren and Lotus, will head a dedicated electronics division within the Gordon Murray Group that will focus on developing EV powertrains for car manufacturers and technology companies.

“The automotive future will be increasingly electrified and it’s essential that we design the world’s lightest, most efficient and advanced EVs,” Murray said. “This significant investment in Gordon Murray Design and the formation of Gordon Murray Electronics will be realizing that goal.”

Murray added that it will take lessons learned through the creation of the lightweight T.50 and use them to the benefit of its electrified vehicles.

“Much of our learning about advanced lightweight materials and construction from the T.50 will play a key role in the electric vehicles that we develop. But we are not abandoning internal combustion power. We will continue to create the pinnacle of driver’s cars – with V12 petrol power as long as the regulations allow and in future we will develop our own hybrid and electric powertrains,” Murray stated.
