The Ford F-150 Lightning may not have the bold styling to match the GMC Hummer EV and Tesla Cybertruck but of all the electric pickup trucks coming to the market, it has the best chance of selling in massive numbers.
Following the unveiling of F-150 Lightning, Ford quickly opened up reservations for the truck and during an interview with CNBC, Ford chief executive Jim Farley revealed the automaker received approximately 20,000 reservations in the first 12 hours, Auto News reports.
To secure a reservation, shoppers simply having to head over to Ford’s website and make a $100 refundable deposit. This reservation will secure their spot in line until they can place an actual order later in the year.
Beyond giving the iconic F-150 an electric powertrain, which itself is a very big deal, one of the most surprising moments of its unveiling was when Ford announced prices will start at $39,974 for the commercial variant before the federal $7,500 EV tax credit. Other versions will be offered, including the XLT that can be purchased from $52,974 and the flagship F-150 Lightning Platinum that starts at $90,474.
Entry-level models with the standard range battery will pack 426 hp and 775 lb-ft while those equipped with the extended range battery will have 563 hp and the same torque figure, allowing them to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in the mid-4 second range. The truck’s payload capacity is rated at 2,000 lbs and towing capacity is rated at up to 10,000 lbs.
