Kia is recalling nearly half a million older Optimas and Sorentos in North America over a fire risk concern.

The exact same lot was involved in a previous safety campaign conducted last fall over an identical issue: a possible short circuit due to the brake fluid that could leak inside the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).

Even though Kia is are unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem, they advise owners to park outside, as there is a “risk of an engine compartment fire while parked or driving”. The MIL and/or ABS warning lights, as well as a burning or melting smell and smoke coming from the engine compartment, could warn drivers of an imminent danger.

There are 440,370 vehicles included in this safety recall: 283,803 Optimas and 156,567 Sorentos. The midsize sedans in question were built between July 12, 2013, and October 2, 2015, and the SUVs came to life from June 17, 2013, to December 11, 2014. All of them were made at the company’s manufacturing facility in Georgia.

To fix the issue, Kia’s authorized technicians will replace the HECU with a new one free of charge. Also, a new 30-ampere fuse will be installed instead of a 40-ampere. Owners who have already repaired their vehicles will be reimbursed.

The planned owner notification is scheduled for July 2, while dealers will be informed on June 28. Kia’s recall number for this safety campaign is SC212, and they can be contacted at 1-800-333-4542. Owners can also get in touch with the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
