There’s been a trend towards speedsters lately for some reason and it’s getting so widespread that even LEGO is getting a speedster now. It comes in the shape of a McLaren Elva.
The Elva, McLaren’s “lightest and most innovative” supercar yet, recently got an… interesting-looking windshield even though McLaren went to the trouble to make sure that the windshield-less speedster doesn’t muss up your hair. The car’s active air management system used aerodynamics to create a bubble around the occupants and shelter them from the wind and it’s a detail that is incorporated into the design of this LEGO set.
Made up of 263 pieces, it not only features the vents that make the wind bubble work, but it also features a two-seat open cockpit and other details. At six inches long (16 cm), three inches wide (7 cm), and 1.5-inches tall (4 cm), the Elva is the perfect size to fit a LEGO person whose hair does not require clever aero tricks to remain unmussed.

The person the character is based on, though, would likely use the vents because it’s inspired by Rachel Brown, McLaren Automotive‘s principal development engineer for the Ultimate Series. And by god am I jealous because if there’s one thing cooler than that job title, it’s having a LEGO figure of your likeness in the world.
“It is amazing to have witnessed the Elva go from a boundary-pushing concept drawing all the way to final vehicle production,” says Brown. “It feels even more special now to see all of that hard work transformed into the LEGO Speed Champions Elva model for us to share with children and fans across the world.”
This is the first speedster in the LEGO Speed Champions collection so it was important for the company to get it right. That’s why is worked closely with both McLaren and Brown to highlight the car’s most important details.
“With LEGO Speed Champions, we hope to bring LEGO fans of all ages closer to the car of their dreams and encourage them to believe they can be whatever they want to be, just like Rachel has,” said Chris Stamp, design manager at LEGO. “That’s why it’s been such a privilege to work with McLaren to create a LEGO version of the Elva. We worked closely with the McLaren team from the conception of the idea when the real Elva was still in early development, all the way through the design process.”
The kit will be available starting this month and the set is priced at a reasonable £17.99 in the UK or $19.99 in the US.
