We all know that car commercials can often be a bit boring, even if the car in them isn’t. But every once in a while, an exciting commercial comes along and we can’t help but love it.
In Toyota‘s new extended spot for the GR Supra entitled “The Pitch,” not only do we get some excitement, but also a bit of a jab at the industry’s desire to always portray things overly safe.
The commercial starts off strong with a pair of white Supras racing down a highway. However, midway though the action it cuts to a boardroom, and we get introduced to the main premise of the commercial: a young, creative team pitching their idea for a new Supra ad to an older, more conservative one. The younger team wants to have fun with the commercial, while the older one wants it to be more subdued. Keep in mind, this is supposed to be for Toyota’s flagship sports car.

The back and forth that ensues is both funny and enjoyable to watch, as we get to see each idea pitched by either side subsequently play out. Probably the best gag would have to be when the younger team proposes a shot of the car doing a burnout, to which the older team suggests they do it “without smoke and with VSC on so the car doesn’t lose traction”.
There’s plenty of other jokes, with everything from grocery shopping in a full race suit to a pizza delivery subplot, but overall it’s just nice to see automakers having fun with their commercials.
