Chevrolet is putting the finishing touches on the 2022 Silverado and the company has confirmed they’ll be adding a new ZR2 variant.

The bow tie brand is staying tight-lipped about specifics, but noted the ZR2 trim was revived in 2017 on the Colorado and has “signified high-performance capability in a wide variety of drive settings – both on- and off-road.” That isn’t much to go on and neither are the teasers as they simply show ZR2 badging and a camouflaged prototype with meaty tires.

While nothing is official, the ZR2 is expected to slot above the Trail Boss and be more off-road focused. Previous spy photos have shown the truck will be equipped with a unique front end that features a prominent skid plate as well as red recovery hooks and a bumper that maximizes the approach angle. We can also expect an off-road focused suspension with additional ground clearance.

Putting the ZR2 aside, the 2022 Silverado will be launched this fall with updated styling inside and out. Designers have paid particular attention to the interior, which has been outclassed by Ford and Ram. The cabin is expected to follow in the footsteps of the Tahoe and adopt a redesigned dashboard, a new infotainment system and higher quality materials.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but they’re expected to carryover. If that’s the case we can expect a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 hp (212 kW / 289 PS) and a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 310 hp (231 kW / 314 PS). They should be joined by 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s with up to 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS), and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six developing 277 hp (207 kW / 281 PS) and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque.
