The Ford GT is one of the most exciting supercars to grace the automotive world in the past few years. Car and Driver wasn’t able to get one of the American automaker’s supercars for its Lighting Lap testing last year, but the outlet got their hands on one recently and boy is it quick.
As the outlet found with the surprisingly quick Chevrolet Camaro V6 1LE at the end of last year, the Ford GT was also blisteringly fast around Virginia International Raceway (VIR). With its 647-hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and trick suspension, the supercar has set track records in some obscure locations.
Car and Driver’s testing, though, didn’t go very smoothly. The outlet destroyed an underbody brake duct after dropping the right-rear wheel off of the track, a software glitch saw an intermittent hydraulic warning appear onto the dash, and taking right-hand corners brought about fuel starvation. The testing doesn’t sound smooth at all.
Still, with all of the problems, the Ford GT managed to set a time of 2:43.0. That’s quicker than a Porsche 918 Spyder (2:43.1), Mercedes-AMG GT R (2:43.4), and Dodge Viper ACR (2:44.2). That time makes the supercar the outlet’s lap holder at VIR, which is impressive.
The outlet claims that they could’ve put down a quicker lap time if they had the vehicle for three days, which is what they normally do. The outlet only had the car for one day. And with the introduction of the Competition Series GT, the supercar will probably be able to put down an even quicker time.
It may not have a V8, but boy is the new Ford GT quick.
