Porsche 928 Driven By Tom Cruise In Risky Business Will Cross The Auction Block Next Month

The 928 was one of Porsche’s lesser-loved cars, but it did play a fairly large role in 1983’s Risky Business movie starring Tom Cruise. Now, the famed movie car is going up for auction.

The 1979 Porsche 928 will be listed as part of Barrett-Jackson‘s Houston auction, and aside from its movie car status, it has quite the history. It’s been in museums, starred in a documentary, and was even the car that Tom Cruise learned how to drive stick in. And while not the 928 that drove into Lake Michigan in the film, it was one of three driven on set and one of two that featured in the chase scene.

The car currently wears the same gold paint as it did in the movie, although it was originally green as well as white at one point. It has been stored in a climate-controlled private collection for a good part of its life, so the paint, along with virtually everything else, is in pristine condition. Complementing the gold hue is a set of the iconic “phone dial” wheels.

Inside you’ll be treated to a sea of saddle brown leather and tan carpeting, two colors that work nicely with the rest of the car’s subtle theme. The only signs of wear on the interior are some minor creases in the seats, but given that this car is 42 years old, the cabin is in very good condition. The 928 also features signatures from multiple members of the film’s cast, including Bronson Pinchot, Joe Pantoliano, Curtis Armstrong, and Francine Locke, and comes with photos of the car on set rigged up with camera equipment.

While it was no 911, the 928 was still a genuine Porsche, and as such featured the engineering of one. Under the hood was a 4.5-liter V8 making 219 hp (222 PS / 163 kW) and 254 lb-ft (344 Nm) of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. 0-60 mph (97 km/h) took a respectable-for-the-time 6.8 seconds, and top speed was rated at 143 mph (230 km/h).
