The Ford Maverick isn’t just intriguing due to its compact size and starting price but also due to the fact that it is sold as standard with a hybrid powertrain as well as a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
Ford proudly boasts that the hybrid model is the market’s most fuel-efficient truck with an EPA-estimated rating of 37 mpg (6.3 lt/100 km) combined. As it turns out, the 2.0-liter model isn’t that bad either.

YouTuber InterUnetAutomotive recently had the chance to film a Maverick Lariat FX4 model up close with the 2.0-liter engine and a look at the digital dash revealed that this particular model had returned an average of 26.6 mpg (8.8 lt/100 km). Admittedly, the truck only has 312 miles (502 km) on the clock and it is unclear what kind of conditions it has been driven in.
Nevertheless, a figure of 26.6 MPG for a four-wheel drive model is impressive. By comparison, the larger 2021 Ford Ranger with its 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder returns 22 mpg (10.7 lt/100 km) over the combined cycle.
The Maverick’s closest rival, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, comes standard with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder producing 190 hp and 180 lb-ft (244 Nm) of torque and has a combined rating of 23 mpg (10.2 lt/100 km). If the 26.6 mpg figure is reflective of the Maverick’s combined fuel consumption, that would mean that the Maverick is more efficient than the Santa Cruz despite the fact that its 250 hp and 277 lb-ft (376 Nm) 2.0-liter EcoBoost is much more powerful.
