We’ve seen quite a few impressive drag car builds in the past, and this Toyota MR2 built by automotive YouTube channel BoostezBoiz is definitely one of them. The MR2 makes over 1,000 horsepower from its four-cylinders engine and was just able to complete the quarter in under 8 seconds.

The build began a few years ago with a bone stock SW20 Toyota MR2. Right away, they removed the original engine, swapped in a Honda K24, then built a turbo kit for it from scratch. At that point, the car was already running sub-12 second quarter miles, but their goal was to get it to have over 1,000 horsepower and be their first 8-second car. The next stage of the build included the addition of a sequential transmission, a roll cage, and a pair of ball bearing turbos. With that setup, it was pushing 1,045 horsepower, and was able to complete its first 8-second pass. Running 40 psi of boost, they were able to come within a hundredth of a second of the world’s fastest MR2.

It was at this point that they decided they wanted to blow the record out of the water and shoot for the world’s first 7-second MR2. This entailed a full rebuild of the car all the way down to the shell, stripping as much weight from it as possible. They traded the K24 for a K20 and swapped out the twin turbos for a larger single unit, allowing for the same amount of power, but with more consistency and reliability. They also switched out the air-to-air intercooler for a water-to-air one, and to mitigate wheelies, they relocated the water and fuel tanks to the nose and added a 100 lb weight plate.

The first pass of this new setup yielded an 8.792-second quarter mile at 171.55 mph. The telemetry system showed the driver was letting off the gas a bit, and they obviously didn’t get their record-breaking time, so they did another run. They got a lot closer that time, running an 8.131-second quarter mile at 181.50 mph. That actually made it the new world’s fastest MR2, but they were still shooting for their 7-second goal. The next run saw a few hiccups with the launch, and it came in a lot slower at 9.872 seconds and 96.26 mph. It was then time for their last run, and they managed to finally achieve their goal, running a 7.982-second quarter mile at 181.94 mph.
