The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the more promising EVs to launch in the past 12 months and eager to see if it lives up to its range claims, YouTuber Bjørn Nyland set about testing it.

On the WLTP cycle, Hyundai says that the long-model model with its 72.6 kWh battery pack, all-wheel drive, and 19-inch wheels, should be able to travel up to 287 miles (462 km) on a single charge. During his test at a consistent motorway speed of 56 mph (90 km/h), Nyland was able to drive for exactly 287 miles and estimates that he used 70.6 kWh during his test.

Nyland also demonstrates some of the Ioniq’s self-driving features during his motorway run, including its radar cruise control, auto-steering system, and automatic lane-change feature.

In a second test, Nyland set about discovering how far he could travel at 75 mph (120 km/h). We know that EVs aren’t particularly fond of high-speed motorway driving and that’s reflected in the results with the Hyundai’s range dropping to 180 miles (289 km).

While the Hyundai Ioniq 5 isn’t the king of range in its class, it makes up for that with excellent charging capabilities. As the car features 800-volt battery technology, it can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes at a 350 kW DC fast-charger. While filing up an ICE alternative with petrol or diesel is much quicker, the Ioniq 5 proves just how quickly EVs and their batteries are developing.
