The Toyota GR Yaris is the hot hatch of the moment. However, can it possibly rival a sports car as well-revered as the Porsche Cayman?
To find out, the Driven Media YouTube channel brought the two together for a series of performance tests. However, this wasn’t a test of a normal GR Yaris and a potent Cayman like the GTS 4.0 or GT4 and instead, the test features a modified GR Yaris and the entry-level Cayman powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The Toyota featured comes courtesy of Evolve Automotive and has been tuned to pump out 320 hp. That’s a big jump over the standard 257 hp mustered up by UK-spec variant of the car’s turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine and has been achieved thanks to a new intake, exhaust, and sports catalytic converters. That gives it a power edge over the Cayman with its 296 hp and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm).

The first drag race doesn’t go particularly well but in the second attempt, the driver of the GR Yaris nails the launch and sprints off into the distance, finishing the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds compared to the 15.4 seconds of the Porsche. The second race is closer but once again, it is the hot hatch that takes the win.
Next is a rolling race from 40 mph where the drivers of the two cars attempt to hit the highest top speed possible. The driver of the Cayman was only able to hit 140 mph before needing to slam on the brakes while the GR Yaris continued to pull through until 150 mph.
Some other performance tests were conducted, including a braking test and a moose test. So, who do you think the overall winner was?
