The Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4² is the ultimate off-road-focused variant of the G-Wagon but it seems most owners never venture out of the city.
It’s fitting then that a prototype for the new 2022 model was recently spied testing on a highway in Los Angeles, exactly the type of place where most 4×4²’s will probably spend their days, being driven around by multi-millionaires and billionaires looking to make a statement.

Mercedes-AMG has been spied testing the new model on a handful of occasions over the past 12 months and this particular prototype is finished in an intriguing shade of blue. It has some camouflage over the wheel arches, roof panels, and spare wheel cover, not that the camouflage is actually hiding anything. This prototype also has a unique set of wheels slightly different than those of other prototypes, including one recently spied at the Nurburgring.
Like the first-generation model, this new 4×4² has a much greater ride height than a regular G-Class thanks to long-travel suspension and the fitment of advanced portal axles. It also features bespoke off-road tires and has a small ladder on the tailgate.
The old model, badged the G500 and G550 4×4² depending on the market, came outfitted with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. However, this engine was not the one from the G63 and instead capped at 416 hp. Given the success of the first-gen 4×4², we expect Mercedes-AMG to this time make the decision to fit the G63’s engine, pumping out a cool 577 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.
