Nostalgia is a powerful tool and Hollywood has been tapping into it with blockbusters based on everything from comic books to toys.
We’ve also seen plenty of nostalgia in the automotive industry as the 1990’s and early 2000’s saw the introduction of retro-inspired models such as the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet HHR and MINI Cooper. The era even birthed oddities such as the Chrysler / Plymouth Prowler and Chevy SSR.
China is apparently going through their own retro phase as we’ve seen a handful of models with old school styling recently. The latest comes from WEY as the automaker will introduce a mysterious new crossover at the Chengdu Auto Show.

The company is keeping details under wraps, but a teaser posted on Weibo shows a retro-inspired crossover that appears to adopt some styling cues from classic Chevrolet Suburbans. As you can see, it has a rounded and recessed grille with horizontal slats as well as a vertical WEY badge. Other highlights include an old school bumper and pronounced fenders with circular headlights.
WEY didn’t say much about the model, but teased it’s “smart for everyone” and “classic just for you.” The rough Chinese translation also suggested it’s the ‘new generation of smart retro driving.’
Virtually nothing is known about the model at this point, but Autohome is reporting it will be unveiled on August 27th. However, it likely won’t be going into production as their report suggests it is simply a concept.
