A 2009 Audi R15 that has raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans has hit the used car market and for any motorsport aficionados out there, could represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an all-time great.

Audi dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the early 2000s and in 2006, caused a sensation with the introduction of the R10 TDI, its first diesel-powered racing prototype. The car proved to be an immediate success, claiming victories in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Fast forward to 2009 and Peugeot’s entry prompted Audi to update the R10. It did just that, unveiling the R15 with a new 5.5-liter turbo-diesel V10 with over 590 hp and 774 lb-ft of torque. This particular example is known as T 101 and was the first R15 chassis built. It was tested for the first time in December 2008 before being officially unveiled and competing at the 12 Hours of Sebring race on March 21, 2009 where it claimed third place overall.

The car then raced at Le Mans with Alexandre Premat, Timo Bernhard, and Romain Dumas behind the wheel where it finished 17th. After Peugeot won that year’s Le Mans race, Audi went back to the drawing board and created the R15 Plus with an improved aerodynamic package. This particular car was updated to R15 Plus configuration for the 2010 season and finished second at the 1000 km of Zhuhai with Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen sharing driving duties. Its last competitive outing came at the 2011 Sebring 12 Hours.

This Audi R15 is the only example in private hands and is being offered for sale by Canepa. While no asking price has been made public, we suspect it is deep into the seven-figure range.
