Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk has confirmed that his very own Tesla Roadster will rocket off to space on February 6.
Musk initially intended on launching the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in January but the launch has been pushed back and only recently announced on Twitter.
The outspoken founder first revealed his intention of sending his Tesla Roadster into space late last year. Unsurprisingly, many were confused as to whether he was serious or not. Although not as unexpected as his announcement of making The Boring Company, it was still an unusual move. When Musk published photos of the sports car being loaded into the rocket’s payload compartment, the unimaginable inched closer to reality.
The Falcon Heavy rocket will soar into the skies next week in a test flight. On Instagram, Musk confirmed “the payload will be an original Tesla Roadster, playing Space Oddity, on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit”.
The original Roadster was the brand’s first production vehicle and made Tesla a household name. However, it now seems rather outdated, particularly due to the developments of battery technology in recent years.
A new generation Tesla Roadster is currently in the works. When it launches in 2020, it promises to be the quickest production car on sale, capable of reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds.
Aiming for first flight of Falcon Heavy on Feb 6 from Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy. Easy viewing from the public causeway.
