BMW and Jeff Koons are joining forces once again as the company has announced a new special edition based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe.
Dubbed the 8 x Jeff Koons, the model will debut at Frieze Los Angeles in February and be produced in limited numbers.
Little is known about the model at this point, but it promises to be an exclusive piece of automotive art. As such, it will feature a “handcrafted” exterior with multi-layer paint that takes over 285 hours to apply. That’s longer than it takes to build entire cars and the process is lengthy, because the model “combines eleven different exterior colors ranging from blue to silver and yellow to black.”

The colorful design continues in the cabin as there will be blue and red seats as well as geometric patterns and “elements of pop art.” The model will also have high-end materials, fine leather, and a cupholder cover with special edition badging as well as Koon’s engraved signature.
Since the 8 x Jeff Koons is simply a special edition, the M850i’s powertrain should carryover. This means we can expect a 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine with 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. It should be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system, which enable the standard model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds.
While Koons’ name might not ring a bell, the artist originally worked with BMW to create an art car in 2010. That model was based on the M3 GT2 and raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, since becoming “among the most instantly recognizable entries in the [art car] collection.
