Undoubtedly one of the most capable hot hatches on the road, the Seat Leon Cupra has proven itself against the competition, against the Nürburgring, even against a team of huskies. So what’s next?
A javelin, that’s what. In its latest showdown, the Spanish automaker pitted its 300-horsepower performance flagship against Olympic gold medalist Barbora Špotáková.
The Czech athlete – a brand ambassador for Seat (not Skoda) – has held the women’s javelin record at 72.28 meters (over 237 feet) since 2008, and has earned more medals than some career military officers. Standing six feet tall with an arm span to match, she can throw that javelin at over 56 miles per hour, and has bested her rivals in competitions around the world.
The latest Cupra, meanwhile, packs a 2.0-liter turbo four, dispatching 300 horsepower to rocket the hot hatch to 62 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds. Only the limited-run Leon Cupra R is more potent in the annals of Seat’s history.
To see which was faster, Seat brought both to a stadium with a track and field in the Czech Republic and arranged a little contest. Car and javelin raced side by side along a distance of 70 meters (230 feet) – near the limit of her capabilities – to see which would reach the finish line first in a best-of-three contest.
Evidently orchestrated to make the contest as close as possible, the car won the first round, and Špotáková won the second. We’re not going to give away the ending, though, so you’ll have to watch the video below to see how that third tiebreaker went down.
