2022 Ford Expedition Refresh Brings Off-Road Timberline Model, More Power, And Extra Tech

A mid-term makeover for Ford’s Expedition brings more power, extra tech, and a tough new off-road trim to the full-size SUV, just in time for a battle with the new Jeep Wagoneer.

There are changes to lights (now LED units) and grilles across the board, plus the option of Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system, but the biggest news is the addition of a new Timberline trim for off-road fans and a Stealth Performance Pack for style-conscious city cruisers.

You’ll spot the Timberline by its orange styling accents, inside and out, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires that help give it a massive 10.6-inches of ground clearance. Ford proudly points out that the Jeep Wagoneer falls 0.6-inches short in this department.

And just in case you actually want to hit the trails, rather than merely trying to make people think you do, there’s a two-speed transfer case, underbody protection from the F-150 Raptor and the Trail Turn Assist feature previously seen on the Bronco. This locks the inside rear wheel to help reduce the turning circle in tight spots.

Getting out of a tight spot on the street shouldn’t be a problem with the 440 hp and 510 lb-ft generated by the same 3.5 Ecoboost V6 fitted to Expeditions optioned with the street-focused Stealth Edition Performance Package. Most other Expeditions make do with 380 hp and 470 lb-ft.

Available on Expedition Limited and Limited Max, the new Stealth Performance pack adds a sportier suspension tune, gloss black exterior accents, black Ford oval emblems, red brake calipers, and black 22-inch wheels.

The journeyman models in the Expedition range haven’t been left out from the upgrade action. Apart from the option of Ford’s BlueCruise semi-autonomous system, buyers also can specify a 12.4-inch digital instrument pack and a massive 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen that’ll be familiar to anyone who has sat in a new Mustang Mach-E.

You also get a full suite of safety gadgets as standard, including lane-keeping assistance, Intersection Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, and a feature that can help you steer around obstacles in an emergency.

The 2022 Expeditions will start rolling out of Ford’s Kentucky plant soon, ready to land in showrooms early next year.
