The GMC Hummer EV has the potential to be one of the most exciting off-roaders launched in recent years and a handful of journalists recently had the opportunity to test it out in prototype form.
The example tested was fitted with the flagship tri-motor powertrain, which will also happen to be the first powertrain that’s available to customers. It pumps out 1,000 hp and during the test, the reviewer has the opportunity to experience the Watts to Freedom launch control that sends the truck to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.0 seconds.
It’s not just in a straight line where the Hummer EV seems to impress. GMC has also equipped the truck with an innovative four-wheel steering system that gives the Hummer EV a turning circle of just 37.1 feet (11.3 meters), roughly the same as a Chevrolet Sonic. This is achieved by turning the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds. The engineer in this video notes that the rear wheels can be turned 10 degrees.

The four-wheel steering also enables the use of the Crab Walk feature which is also tested in this video. The reviewer is left flabbergasted by the system, noting that it feels ‘weird’. This unique feature can be used at up to roughly 20 mph (32 km/h).
Other impressive off-road stats for the GMC Hummer EV include 10.1 inches (257 mm) of ground clearance, water fording of 26 inches (660 mm), and approach, departure, and breakover angles of 41.5°, 31.6°, and 22.3° respectively.
The first deliveries of the GMC Hummer EV are slated to start in the fall of 2022.
