It has only been a few months since the Ferrari 296 GTB was unveiled and already, the Italian car manufacturer has started testing the car in convertible guise.

This heavily disguised prototype was recently spied testing at the company’s facility in Maranello, Italy and on surrounding streets. While the engineers inside the car tried their best to avoid being spotted by YouTuber Varryx, they were unable to get by without being filmed.

Despite Ferrari’s best attempts to hide the design of the car, we can see that it has a unique decklid compared to the Coupe and has a small upright rear window. Much like the Ferrari SF90 Spider and F8 Spider, the droptop variant of the 296 GTB has a folding hardtop. Few other changes are expected to be made to the car and it remains unclear if it will be dubbed the 296 Spider or, perhaps, the 296 GTS.

Whatever the case may be, we know it will have the same powertrain as the Coupe. That means a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 pumping out 654 hp, the highest specific output of any current production engine. Supplementing this engine is a 164 hp electric motor sandwiched between the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and the V6, resulting in a total of 819 hp and 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) of torque.

In all likelihood, the convertible version will weigh slightly more than the Coupe but it should offer a near-identical driving experience. We expect to see the car launched in the next 12 months or so.
