Ford is recalling a touch under 38,000 Ranger Super Cab models from the 2020 and 2021 model years due to a child seat-related issue.
A recall notice issued by the car manufacturer reveals that the fixed head restraints of the 2020 and 2021 Ford Ranger models may interfere with the installation of taller, rigid anchor-mounted child seats, and prevent them from being secured. A review found that affected vehicles fitted with fixed head restraints were manufactured from July 16, 2019, to September 17, 2021.

Ford did introduce fixed, non-removable rear seat head restraints at the start of production for the 2020 model year but did not re-certify these vehicles to the automaker’s internal FMVSS 225 certification results. In addition, installation tolerance for the rear lower child restraint anchorages was not properly monitored, resulting in anchorages that may not be straight and horizontal for certain 2021 model year vehicles.
The recall confirms that a total of 37,625 Ranger vehicles are affected. Ford is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to the problem and dealers will inspect the rear lower latch anchors and adjust them if necessary. Dealers will also replace the non-removable head restraints with removable ones.
The automaker informed dealerships of the recall on October 1, 2021, and plans to notify owners on November 15, 2021. Repairs will be carried out free of charge.
