With rumors of a new-generation Audi A6 arriving as early as this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, we expect the saloon model to land first, followed by this family-oriented Avant version at a later date.

Either way, all signs point to a new Audi A6 range taking on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series this year. The Avant version of the all-new A6 will act as a direct rival to the E-Class Estate, 5-Series Touring, Jaguar XF Sportbrake and Volvo V90.

Since the A6 is the latest model to join the party out of all these nameplates, odds are it will pack even more advanced safety tech than its rivals. According to reports, the A6 will get Level 3 autonomous features just like the all-new A8, to go with a digital instrument cluster and dual console displays, like on the new A7.

As for what it’s going to look like, while these scoops from our partners at CarPix do provide us with a really close look at the upcoming A6 Avant, the prototype remains heavily camouflaged. The rear end design does look similar to that of the smaller A4 Avant, though with what appear to be slightly smaller taillights, possibly connected by a light strip.

When it comes to driver assistance features, it could boast as many as five radar sensors, five cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a laser scanner for good measure.

Providing power for the new-gen A6 Avant (and Sedan for that matter) will be a wide range of four and six-cylinder engines, including a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 that currently helps the A7 reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds.

Allroad and RS6 versions should join the range a little further down the line, in either late 2018 or sometime next year.
