BMW is getting ready for the next step in terms of electrification with the Neue Klasse platform that is currently under development.

The Neue Klasse platform is set to replace both FAAR and CLAR architectures. Its modular design will allow FWD, RWD, and AWD capability, different battery packs, and different wheelbase lengths, track widths, ride heights, and wheel sizes ranging from 18 to 22 inches.

According to Autocar, the modular architecture will be introduced in late 2025 in the form of a fully electric alternative to the 3 Series and is set to eventually underpin all models in BMW’s future range. The electric models based on the Neue Klasse are expected to account for at least 50% of BMW’s global sales by 2030.

The platform will be manufactured of aluminum and high-strength steel and besides BEVs, it will also support plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. Frank Weber, research and development chief at BMW claims that the Neue Klasse will underpin future models ranging from the 2 Series all the way up to an X7.

The first model to use the new platform will be an electric sedan codenamed NK1 that it will serve as an alternative to the next 3 Series. It is expected to feature BMW’s sixth-generation electric powertrain with more efficient electric motors, combined with 800V higher-density batteries offering a longer range around 435 miles (700 km) and with 350kW charging capability.

In line with the new trend in the automotive world, NK1 will be built using sustainable materials, focused on low weight. It is also expected to get the latest tech in terms of infotainment and connectivity. Design-wise, it will introduce new proportions and a longer wheelbase allowing for better use of the interior space.

The NK1 is expected to premiere by the end of 2025, after the i4, i5, and i7 electric sedans that will be based on the current CLAR architecture. The model will embark on the third phase of BMW’s electric strategy, following the BMW i3 (2013) and the BMW iX (2020) milestones.
