If you can get over its controversial styling, the new BMW M3 Competition is an excellent sports sedan and an aftermarket exhaust system can really give it an extra level of appeal.

Powering the M3 Competition, and the M4, is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that pumps out 503 hp. It is an excellent engine but it doesn’t have the most evocative soundtrack. That’s where Armytrix comes into the equation.

The M3 Competition featured in this video is owned by a friend of the man behind the popular AutoTopNL channel on YouTube and wasn’t just equipped with Armytrix 200-cell downpipes but the standard gasoline particulate filter and mid-silencers were also removed.

The addition of this exhaust has a transformative effect on how the car sounds and allows the boosted engine to breathe much easier. It also produces some nice pops and crackles on the overrun.

Of course, it goes without saying that even with an aftermarket exhaust, the engine of the G80-generation M3 doesn’t sound as good as some previous iterations of the M3, most notably the E92 with its 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8. Call us old fashioned but the note produced by the E92 M3 is truly intoxicating. The high-revving six-cylinder of the E46 M3 also sounds very nice, even though it delivers roughly 160 hp less than the current car.
