The Mercedes-AMG GT will survive into a second generation and exist alongside the all-new SL, the company has confirmed.
The new Mercedes-AMG SL doesn’t just replace the old model but also fills the void left behind by the AMG GT Convertible. However, it won’t replace the AMG GT Coupe, according to Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener.

While speaking with Road & Track, Wagener said that the new SL is more of a traditional sports car than the GT, noting that some buyers consider the current GT to be a little too harsh for everyday driving.
“The GT of course obviously is more of a race car or sports car,” Wagener said. “And I mean this new SL is a true sports car, definitely. But also I mean with air suspension and all the possibilities you have, you can turn it from a cruiser to a race car with the click of a button.”
Details about the next-generation Mercedes-AMG GT are limited but it will feature the same 2+2 platform as the new SL. There’s no word on when the new AMG GT will launch but given that the SL will be sold exclusively with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 available in two different specifications, it seems unlikely that the GT will ditch its current V8 for something smaller like the upcoming four-cylinder C63 is doing.
Wagener added that the interior of the SL further differentiates it from the GT.
“This is a digital roadster, with not only the latest and greatest in user interaction systems with the next-level MBUX, but also with all the electronic features, driving assistance systems, which the GT doesn’t have because it is a pure driving car,” he said. “The current GT is a pure driving car, and basically the new SL is a completely different kind. With all of the tech that is in there it will make a huge difference, between day and night.”
