After the GR Supra, GR 86, GR Yaris, and plenty of GR Sport models based on Toyota’s global range, it is natural for Gazoo Racing to expand its range with faster and more focused offerings. A report from the Japanese website Carsensor reheats old rumors about upcoming GRMN variants of the Yaris and the Supra, the GR Corolla hot hatchback, and the long-awaited manual GR Supra, adding a few extra bits of information.

For those who are not familiar with the rather confusing naming strategy, the GRMN nameplate is reserved for extreme sports models. This means it is positioned above the GR (serious sports models), GR Sport (entry-level sports models), and GR Parts (accessories).

What could be the upcoming GRMN Yaris has been spied testing at the Nurburgring with added aero bits.

Starting with the GR Yaris, a track-focused variant has been spied at the Nurburgring more than once during the past months. The last time it was free of camouflage, revealing a set of new aero components including a prominent splitter, front bumper canards, front fender air vents, plus a larger rear wing. These features alongside a more aggressive suspension setup and weight-saving measures would make the pocket-rocket even more agile than the stock model.

The new report claims the GRMN Yaris will be fitted with a more powerful version of the turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine producing 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS) in comparison with the 257 hp (192 kW / 261 PS) on the current EU-Spec GR Yaris. The Japanese magazine also talks about the addition of an electric motor moving the rear axle – something that we would take with a pinch of salt since the GR Yaris is already equipped with a rally-bred GR-Four AWD system.

Moving on to the GR Corolla, we have heard plenty of rumors in the past two years for the alleged return of Toyota in the compact hot hatch segment a long time after the forgettable Corolla T-Sport. The report suggests that the GR Corolla will share the 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS) 1.6-liter motor with the aforementioned GRMN Yaris and will also come with an AWD system.

We wouldn’t bet on that since earlier rumors talked about a front-wheel-drive hot hatch to go after the likes of the Honda Civic Type R rather than the VW Golf R. The good news is that either FWD or AWD, the GR Corolla will likely be available Stateside since Toyota has confirmed it will bring a hot hatch in the U.S. market. In terms of styling, the GR Corolla’s bodykit could be inspired by the hydrogen-powered Corolla racecar prototype.

Still Waiting For A Manual Supra

And now we move on to the rumors about the GR Supra. Almost two years ago, Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Supra, told Motortrend that Toyota did consider a manual gearbox for the RWD sportscar but the automatic was much faster and more durable. However, Carsensor supports earlier claims about a manual option for GR Supra stating that it will be unveiled in spring 2022, exclusively combined with the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine.

The next rumor has to do about a possible GRMN Supra as a limited production performance flagship allegedly scheduled for a mid-2023 debut. This sounds more plausible since a GRMN was already hinted at by Tetsuya Tada even though earlier rumors for a 2020 reveal did not materialize. The fastest Supra could be fitted with the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six from the BMW M3 and M4 which produces 473 hp (353 kW / 480 PS) in base spec or up to 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) in Competition guise. Another advantage is that this engine can also be combined with a six-speed manual and RWD, which would be suitable for the Supra.

All in all, the report is mostly a resume of older rumors, and while some of them sound legit, we will have to wait until Toyota Gazoo Racing or any Toyota high-ranked executive decides it is the right time to make announcements.
