A lot of automakers are attempting to create a common design language throughout their entire lineup. For example, look at Lexus with the hate-it-or-love-it spindle grille that’s been implemented along its range. BMW has been doing it for years, and the latest spy shots of the 2019 3- Series reveals that they remain on the same path.

Code-named the G20, the 3-Series was spotted winter testing with less camouflage than ever, which has given us our best look at some of the sedan’s features. For one, while the current generation of the 3-Series has a round front end that’s more bulbous than angular, the G20 will adopt the 5-Series’ more upright and angular nose.

Besides that, it looks like the automaker’s design cues will find their way to the next-gen 3-Series. BMW’s kidney grille, short overhangs at the front and back, and rectangular air intake on the front fascia are all present on the prototype. And just like the 5-Series, the 3-Series that was caught testing has a camera nuzzled into the lower air intake.

More interestingly, a few of the photos reveal a prototype that’s wearing chains on the rear wheels, while another one isn’t. That leaves us to believe that BMW was testing a rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variant of the sedan. No surprise there, as we expect BMW to continue to sell the 3-Series with both drivetrains.

As far as the engines are concerned, we expect the next-gen 3-Series to have a wide range of gasoline and diesel (at least in Europe) engines. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be offered, as is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder. Two hybrid powertrains are expected to be available, as is an electric variant.
