SpaceX launched its Falcon Heavy rocket – reportedly the most powerful rocket in the world – with CEO Elon Musk’s very own Tesla Roadster on board.
When Musk first revealed his intentions of launching an electric vehicle into space, we have to admit that we were a little skeptical. But Musk was adamant claiming the vehicle would remain in “deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn’t blow up on ascent.” Sure, we thought, like that will ever happen. Incredibly, it did.
At 3:45 PM EST, the Falcon Heavy set off on its course from Cape Canaveral with a Roadster tucked away inside of the machine. The car even has a passenger behind the wheel of the vehicle, “Starman,” who’s outfitted with a prototype of SpaceX’s space suit.
In addition to blasting David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” Motor1 reports that a Hot Wheels car and a laser disc with information on humans is inside the vehicle, as well. That last part should be useful for any aliens out there that find the Tesla.
Watching “Starman” and the Roadster soar into space is just mesmerizing. And thanks to SpaceX’s YouTube account, we get to watch the test flight over and over again, which is below for everyone’s enjoyment. The live stream of “Starman,” though has some more unbelievable views.
It’s truly an incredible time to be alive. While the old Roadster will be in space forever, Tesla plans to unveil a new variant in the near future. That model will help individuals experience acceleration that’s almost as brutal as being launched into space with a zero-to-60-mph time of just 1.9 seconds.
