The Lightyear One Pioneer Edition is slated to go into production next year and cost a whopping €150,000.
That puts the solar-focused car out of the reach of most consumers, but a more affordable option is on the horizon as the company has just announced their second model. Dubbed the Two, the vehicle “builds on the technology developed” for the One and is scheduled to go into production in 2024 or 2025.
The company didn’t go into many specifics, but confirmed the model will be offered in a variety of global markets including Europe and the United States. The car will also be far more affordable as pricing will begin at €30,000 (the equivalent of $33,779).

We’ll likely learn more shortly, but the Lightyear One is a futuristic electric vehicle that is equipped with five square meters (53.8 square feet) of solar panels. They promise to allow owners to “drive for months without charging” as the car can get approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) of range for every hour it’s parked under the sun. Furthermore, with a fully charged battery, the One has a range of 725 km (450 miles) in the WLTP cycle.
Update: As expected, officials revealed a few more details about the Two in a media briefing. In particular, they said Valmet will be tapped for production and the model will have a smaller battery than the One. The latter move will allow for more affordable pricing as well as quicker recharging times.
While a smaller battery also implies less range, Lightyear doesn’t believe this will be an issue as the model will require five times less charging than a typical EV, thanks to its solar panels.
Besides releasing initial details about the Two, Lightyear announced an agreement with LeasePlan that will see the company reserve 5,000 units of the upcoming electric vehicle. That’s on top of their commitment to the Lightyear One.
Lightyear CEO Lex Hoefsloot said, “LeasePlan has been a very strong partner for us since 2018. Today’s announcement is a testament to their commitment to our product vision to make clean mobility accessible for everyone.”
His sentiments were echoed by LeasePlan CEO Tex Gunning, who said they’ll “deliver the world’s first solar-powered car subscription.” He added, they “look forward to joining forces with Lightyear and putting drivers behind the wheel of some of the cleanest, most innovative EVs ever produced.”
