The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is an absolute beast of a car but there are a number of tuners out there that will take standard Mustang GT models and give them even more power than the GT500. Britain’s Clive Sutton is one of them.

For Mustang GT owners in the UK wanting extra performance, Clive Sutton can equip the standard 5.0-liter V8 with a massive supercharger and perform various other upgrades so it pumps out no less than 847 hp. To put that into perspective, the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 of the Shelby GT500 delivers 760 hp.

To see which of the two is quickest, CarWow performed a number of performance tests with the duo, starting off with a drag race from a standing start.

Off the line, the Mustang GT modified by Clive Sutton has the better launch but as it was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission while the GT500 has a seven-speed dual-clutch, it lost the lead as soon as the driver shifted into second gear. The Shelby ultimately finished the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds while the tuned Mustang needed 12.2 seconds.

A rolling race is then held which, in theory, should help to reduce the GT’s disadvantage of having a six-speed manual. Initially, the two are very evenly matched but once again, the moment the driver of tuned ‘Stang makes a gear change, the GT500 pulls slightly ahead.
