McLaren has revealed that it wants to race the lightweight Senna hypercar.
During a recent interview with Autocar, McLaren Automotive chief executive Mike Flewitt revealed that the British manufacturer is in the early stages of working on a plan to race the Senna.
“I certainly could conceive racing [the Senna]. I genuinely cannot confirm anything at the minute but we are working on a plan,” Flewitt said.
At this stage, it isn’t known if there are any racing series’ where the Senna would be eligible to compete. However, it is possible that McLaren could be pondering an entrance in the Le Mans 24 Hours if regulations are changed.
Reports indicate that the Automobile Club de l’Ouest could change Le Mans regulations, shifting focus back to road-legal supercars instead of the hugely expensive LMP1 prototypes. If this were the case, the Senna could theoretically compete at the famous endurance race, potentially alongside the likes of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG Project One.
Whatever the racing future holds for the Senna, McLaren is confident in its ability to be competitive with just a few modifications.
“The way it is designed from an aerodynamic perspective, and the sheer balance of our cars, would be very, very competitive. You could never say outright that you’d go and win, but we wouldn’t go in with any other intention,” Flewitt added.
