While the maintenance of a large sedan from Alfa Romeo sounds like a nightmare, I admit that I check the prices of used Italian flagships more often than I should. A restomod project based on the Alfa Romeo 164 that appeared on my feed recently thanks to Alfatitude made me crave one even more. After all the Pininfarina-designed 164 was the last car developed by Alfa Romeo as an independent company so it is kind of collectible.

The one-off restomod was completed by BTS Creativity with the intent of being a demonstration vehicle for showcasing what they can do for future clients. The car was presented in Expo Tuning Torino 2020 where it won the show’s award. The base for the project was an Alfa Romeo 164 QV that was abandoned in a countryside farmhouse, with the team carefully restoring every bit of the sedan inside-out.

Starting with the exterior, the body kit of the Quadrifoglio Verde trim was recreated in carbon fiber, for that classic dual-tone look combined with the newly-applied Rosso Competizione shade of the bodywork. The highlight of course is the bespoke 18-inch forged alloy wheels with a phone-dial design inspired by the 156 GTA. Other touches include the heavily tinted headlights borrowed from the facelifted 164, the yellow foglights, and the carbon-fiber scudetto.

Changes are equally impressive inside the cabin where the team overhauled the sport seats making them more anatomical and upholstering them in tan-colored leather and Alcantara reminiscent of Ferrari. The same material was applied on the instrument cluster, the left side of the center console, and the door cards by specialists at La Selleria, working like magic in combination with the wooden steering wheel.

Unfortunately, the donor car didn’t come with its original 3.0-liter V6 Busso engine. Thus, the restomod was retrofitted with the smaller 2.0 TB V6 12-valve Busso, which was offered in the early ’90s as a more tax-friendly option. The turbocharged V6 produced up to 207 hp (154 kW / 207 PS) and 306 Nm (226 lb-ft) of torque when new, offering a 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 243 km/h. Power is transmitted to the front axle through a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Another casualty over the original 164 Quadrifoglio Verde was the stock electronically-controlled suspension that was replaced by a custom lowered suspension kit. What is cool though are the Quadrifoglio-sourced brakes with large ventilated discs and red-painted Brembo calipers bearing Alfa Romeo lettering. As explained by designer Antonio Lafata, their goal was “not only to complement the original design, but also to enhance the entire car giving it the chance to shine just as much, if not even more than in its prime youth.”

We don’t know the price of this unique Alfa Romeo 164 restomod – or if it’s even offered for sale – but judging from the hours spent on restoring the vehicle and the cost of the materials, it seems likely that a stock 164 Quadrifoglio Verde in pristine condition would cost less.
