Volvo today announced that it is deepening its partnership with Google and Qualcomm in order to improve the infotainment systems in its and Polestar’s upcoming electric vehicles.

The automaker will move to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms as a central hub for its high-performance computing needs. That will allow Volvo and Polestar’s upcoming display screens to be more than twice as fast as they are today, while its graphics generation will be up to 10 times faster.

Expected to first be shown in the Polestar 3, the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform will allow the EV to perform the highly demanding graphics, audio, and artificial intelligence features that are required of it while also using very little electricity.

“Our goal is to support Volvo Cars by integrating cutting-edge, scalable, and upgradable technology that provides premium experiences today and into the future for their customers,” said Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President and President of Europe/MEA, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. “We are proud of the strong organizational concentration in automotive that we have in Europe, which spans across engineering, services, product marketing, and go-to-market.”

Although the system will be based on the Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms, users will still interact with a Google Android operating system. Volvo says it will be the first automaker to directly integrate Google Assistant-enabled devices into its vehicles. It will also soon add YouTube as a built-in app in its cars.

By integrating its vehicles with Google Assistant-enabled devices, owners will be able to control a variety of the vehicle’s features from outside their vehicle. A customer could, for instance, ask their assistant to warm up their car from the breakfast table if they notice that it’s cold outside.

“Volvo Cars is a company that believes in collaborating with technology leaders such as Qualcomm Technologies Inc. and Google to deliver the best experience to our customers,” said Henrik Green, Volvo Cars Chief Product Officer. “With Qualcomm technology in our forthcoming fully electric SUV, our Google Android-based infotainment system will reach the next level.”
