Just a few years ago there weren’t any hardcore straight-up competitors to Tesla but times have changed. Now brands are popping up with new rivals all over the place including Hyundai, Porsche, and BMW. The latter’s i4 is perhaps the most under-estimated of the bunch and now we get to see it go head to head against a Tesla Model 3 Performance.

The i4 is the first all-electric sedan from BMW to look and drive the way that it does. Sure, the company has big plans, but the i4 M50 that’s being tested here is as quick as an ICE-powered M3 or M4 while costing less. That can’t be a recipe for failure.

So let’s talk about the statistics on each of these mid-size all-electric luxury vehicles. The BMW i4 is the brand’s first direct competitor to a Tesla product and that’s clear when you look at the stat sheet. The top trim M50 uses two motors to make 540 hp. The Tesla Model 3 Performance uses two motors as well and makes 480 hp.

The i4 has an 81 kWh battery pack which is slightly bigger than the 77 kWh pack of the Model 3. The Bimmer starts around $65,000 while the Tesla starts a bit lower at $58,000. The BMW offers up to $7,500 worth of federal tax breaks though while the Tesla doesn’t. So what happens in the real world when these cars are pitted against one another and the stat sheet doesn’t matter? The answer is that the Tesla wipes the floor with its new rival.

It might not be as powerful but you’d never know that since it rockets from 0-60 (0-96 km/h) in just 3.6-seconds whereas the BMW needs 4.2. It’s not all about speed though. Almost everything about the BMW is great, but it’s not dramatically better than the Tesla. It’s not perfect though. Materials quality isn’t as good and there’s no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay but that’s not enough to win this competition.

The Tesla is cheaper, faster, and can go further too. The EPA estimates the Model 3 can go 315 miles (507 km) while the BMW will literally left be on the side of the road just 270 miles (434 km) into the same drive. I guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer for someone to actually shock Tesla with an EV that can handily beat it.
