Ferrari will begin production of the long-awaited Purosangue SUV later this year before customer deliveries commence in 2023.

It has been almost three and a half years since Ferrari confirmed that it would enter the SUV market, producing a rival to the likes of the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX. While the carmaker continues to keep key details about the vehicle under wraps, it confirmed that its launch is just around the corner during the release of its financial results for 2021.

A host of Purosangue prototypes have been spied testing in recent months and it seems clear that the Purosangue won’t have a typical SUV shape quite like the Urus and DBX and instead fall somewhere between its rivals and the GTC4lusso. Other than the overall shape of the vehicle, very little is known about its design as most prototypes have been a mish-mash of various Ferrari and Maserati parts.

A number of different powertrains are expected for the Purosangue. One powertrain said to be in the works is the same basic 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid system as the 296 GTB. This powertrain delivers a total of 819 hp and 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) and if transplanted into the Purosangue without any de-tuning, would easily make it the most powerful SUV in production. If the 2.9-liter V6 was fitted without the electric motor, it would still churn out 654 hp and have a power advantage over the Urus.

Other reports suggest that the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 of the SF90 Stradale, without the supercar’s electric motors, is also a possibility. There’s even a chance a naturally aspirated V12 could be offered, although we it’s a rather slim one.
