From the moment the first leaked photos of the new BMW X4 landed on our hands, we all scratched our heads trying to think which other model does the latest Bavarian SAC reminds us. I know, it’s hard to pin that down.
Now, and for the avoidance of being accused that we give credit to Mercedes for coming up with the whole SUV Coupe thing, we need to remind you that it’s BMW who’s originally responsible for one of the Internet’s most hated niche segments in the car world.
With that said, the distance between the Internet and the real world is rather colossal as the specific SUV sub-segment is thriving commercially around the globe, reminding us that you shouldn’t always take negative comments online seriously. (I know, right?)
The 2019 BMW X4 is now bigger, lighter and features all the high-tech stuff you would expect from a premium SUV these days. More importantly in our case, the new X4 showcases BMW’s latest interpretation of what an SUV Coupe should look like, hiding its inherently clumsy proportions under a sleeker bodywork.
So far, the only other manufacturer who tried to improve the looks of an SUV with a chopped, sloping roof was Mercedes with its GLE Coupe and GLC Coupe, with the latter arguably being the nemesis for the 2019 BMW X4. And apparently, there’s only so much a designer can do to make a car like this look better.
So let’s compare the two arch-rivals in our traditional detailed fashion and in order to find out which one wins our vote.
Obviously the two models adopt their respective companies design language at the front, making sure that their identity will be loud and clear out there, on the real world.
Things get a bit vaguer when you start comparing the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe from their other perspectives.
To make your decision a bit more difficult, we even found photos of the GLC Coupe in a similar red paintjob!
At least both of their interiors have their own distinct personality. But they both also have tablet-like displays for their infotainment systems.
Ok, let’s try to compare them one last time using a Mercedes GLC Coupe in a different shade.
That’s it then, go ahead, cast your vote and decide which one between the all-new BMW X4 and the Mercedes GLC Coupe wins this weird beauty contest, because we certainly can’t decide.
