Volkswagen unveiled the ID. Buzz last Tuesday and in the next few days the internet was flooded with hands-on videos from the official presentation. We gathered the most interesting among them, giving a greater insight into the design and features of the fully electric MPV.

Europe will be the first market to get the ID. Buzz, as VW will start accepting orders from May 2022, with the first deliveries scheduled for the third quarter of the year. North America will get a longer-wheelbase version of the passenger ID. Buzz with sales starting in 2024 but that doesn’t make US-based automotive journalists less interested in the EV.

Most of the video reviews of static preproduction prototypes you’re going to see praised the styling of the exterior and the roominess of the interior. Indeed, the ID. Buzz is differentiated from your classic passenger van thanks to features like the LED the modern bumper intakes, the LED headlights wrapped around the curved face, the three decorative elements on the D-pillar reminiscent of side intakes, the flashy two-tone paintjobs inspired by the T1, the optionally available 21-inch wheels, and the full-width taillights.

Autogefuehl’s video is probably the most interesting in terms of new information thanks to the interview of Klaus Zyciora, head of VW group design, who talks about the design development of the ID. Buzz while host Thomas Majchrzak is driving the EV. Among the things he said are some elements he would like to improve from the viewpoint of a designer that couldn’t be materialized in the final product to various restrictions.

Although he is very happy with the result, he states he would like “to have the windshield a little bit more forward and the overhang a little bit shorter”, while he also wished for flush door handles, a bigger roof, and some extra bits inside the cabin in terms of materials. The design chief admits that the concept car was the ultimate goal and even though it gave a “headache” to engineers, the overwhelming reaction of the public was what changed the minds of the shareholders who then pushed to make it a reality.

Top Gear has fancy cinematography showing the car from every possible angle inside and out. The host acknowledges the uniqueness of a fully electric MPV (not just a van) with plenty of style and character.

In a similar manner, the Redline Reviews video with the editor in chief Sofyan Bey as a presenter concludes that the ID. Buzz can make vans cool again, with its style helping it gain popularity when it arrives in the US market.

Ryan Zummallen from Edmunds is impressed with the available space inside, describing the ID. Buzz as a “charming little package”. However, he also asks a few questions including whether the model is “a fully baked idea or a rush to build goodwill in the EV community”.

Finally, Bjørn Nyland gives a throughout the review of the interior praising the headroom and the boot size after measuring it, while for those who prefer POV videos, Mécanique Sportive gives a nice tour of the ID.
