Tesla must recall 947 vehicles in the U.S. due to a software issue that is causing the backup cam to take too long to show up onscreen, putting its vehicles in contravention of regulations.
The recall affects 2017-2020 Tesla Model 3s built between September 1, 2017, and May 29, 2020; 2018-2019 Tesla Model S cars made between February 25, 2018, and July 22, 2019; and 2018-2019 Tesla Model X vehicles made between March 8, 2018, and August 8, 2019.
A small number of the above-listed vehicles equipped with Autopilot Computer 2.5 and running firmware releases between 2021.44.25 and 2021.44.25.2 have rear-view cameras that may not comply with FMVSS 111, S5.5.3 requiring backup cameras to display the feed within two seconds of the start of a reversing event.

Vehicles within the recall field may not display the image quickly enough because the computer may reset as the reversing event begins, delaying feed and causing the screen to display a blank image. Fortunately, the reset does not affect other displays or vehicle controls found on the touchscreen.
The solution is a simple over-the-air update to bring the system in compliance with the rules governing backup cameras. That will come with firmware 2021.44.30 or later releases that ensure that the camera feed displays on-screen within two seconds of the driver shifting into reverse. The update will be offered to owners free of charge.
