General Motors must recall 1,094 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks from the 2019-2022 model years as a result of a tonneau cover that has already been recalled. The company just forgot about dealer accessories.
The vehicles—1500s, 2500s, and 3500s—are fitted with a Truck Hero tri-fold soft tonneau cover over the bed that may not be securely attached enough to the vehicle. That means that the part could come loose and, if that happens while the truck is being driven, it could fly off onto the road as happened to a customer in Canada, which is what started this new recall round.
The fault was previously known and customers who had one of these tri-fold tonneau covers from the factory may consider this old news. On January 28, however, an engineer at GM Canada submitted a “Speak Up For Safety” report about a customer complaining that their cover had flown off on the highway despite their truck not having been identified in the original recall.

A GM investigation, and an analysis of U.S. and Canada part-sales records, identified additional trucks that were not included in the first round and whose tonneau covers were sold as over-the-counter accessories. The company also identified a population of vehicles that may have been incorrectly reintroduced into saleable service stock.
All of which means that GM is getting ready for another recall and will get in touch with customers starting on May 16. They will be asked to bring their vehicle into a service center where the dealer will replace the tonneau rails and clamps and add a tether to prevent the cover from detaching onto the road, even if it was incorrectly installed. Owners will also be given instructions on how to properly tie their cover down.
