We’ve known for a little while that an all-new Kia Niro was coming to the states but now we have a lot more information about its improvements over the outgoing model. Three different electrified powertrains are coming and each one has a trick or two up its sleeve.
It’s also going to look a little more like the rest of the lineup as it takes quite a few cues from the HabaNiro concept from 2019. It’s slightly larger in each dimension which provides more interior space.
Speaking of the inside, it looks a lot like the EV6 all-electric crossover sedan we drove a few months back but it’s what’s under the hood that really counts for the 2023 Niro.

The base powertrain is that of a conventional hybrid that makes 139 horsepower and Kia says that it’s targeting 53 mpg combined. That would put it at the head of the class and provide an estimated total range of 588 miles per tank of fuel.
Kia will also offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Niro which makes 180 horsepower and features an estimated 33 miles of all-electric range when fitted with 16-inch wheels. The brand says that it can fully charge in under three hours when connected to a Level 2 charger.
Finally, an all-new Niro EV is coming to our shores too with a combined 201 horsepower (150 kW) and a targeted range of 253 miles. Hooked up to a Level 3 charger, Kia says that it’ll go from 10 to 80 percent in under 45 minutes.
Another cool feature is Green Zone Drive Mode and now we can confirm that all three drivetrains will use it. When in residential areas, nearby schools, or hospitals, Green Zone will use the onboard navigation to switch the vehicle to EV drive mode.
Every Niro regardless of powertrain will also get a slew of driver assistance tech like lane-keep assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, and lane-following assist. Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control is available optionally throughout the entire lineup as well.
The new 2023 Kia Niro in each of its forms goes on sale this summer across all 50 states.
