General Motors must recall 2,687 SUVs from the 2015 model year because of a faulty airbag inflator that could explode during an accident and send shrapnel flying into the passenger cabin.
The recall list includes 542 units of the 2015 Buick Enclave made between November 5, 2014, and January 28, 2015; 1,183 examples of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse made between November 5, 2014, and March 24, 2015; and 962 units of the 2015 GMC Acadia made between October 29, 2014, and March 26, 2015. However, ess than one percent of the vehicles included in the recall are expected to have the faulty part, GM estimates.
The automaker is only aware of one incident in which the inflator has exploded, which was brought to its attention by a claim letter from an attorney representing the owner of a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse. The claimant said that on February 18, 2022, the front driver-side airbag inflator ruptured during a crash, and GM later confirmed that it had in a subsequent inspection.

Although the reason for the rupturing airbag is not laid out in the recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a risk of serious injury or even death if it does explode. General Motors has chosen, therefore, to recall all vehicles fitted with airbags supplied to it as part of the same manufacturing lot as the inflator under investigation.
The automaker plans to get in touch with customers starting on May 30 and will ask them to return their vehicles to their dealership. GM said that the front driver’s side airbag will be inspected and replaced with a new unit at no cost to the owner.
GM isn’t the only automaker facing a recall for a non-Takata airbag that could explode in an accident. In October, Volvo recalled 460,000 worldwide for a similar issue.
