BMW has issued a recall impacting more than 61,000 vehicles due to a sunroof issue.
A recall report issued with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that impacted vehicles have a roof function control unit that may not fully conform to FMVSS 118 Section 4. More specifically, it may be possible to close the sunroof without the key fob present in the vehicle “through other remote means.”
BMW states that were the sunroof closed without the key fob present, this could increase the risk of injury.

BMW first became aware of a potential issue in March 2022 during a testing and analysis program. An engineering review was initiated and revealed that certain aspects of the sunroof operation software may not have been appropriate for U.S. vehicles. In fact, the roof function control unit had software containing functionality for other markets.
Owners will be notified of the recall on June 13, 2022 and asked to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer to be fixed. Alternatively, an Over-The-Air update will be available.
