BMW was on fire in the 1980s, and hot on the heels of multiple victories in sports car racing, the M division decided to spin its spanners over to its big coupe: the 6-series.
Nicknamed the “Sharknose” for its pointed brow that sticks out almost as far as the diving board bumpers, the 6-series was developed from the first generation of the brand’s popular and capable 5-series.
The M version kicks it up another few notches with stiffer anti-roll bars, springs, and shocks. The ride height was also lowered by half an inch, while the steering was tuned to provide a better feel. Just 1,677 units of the M6 made it to US shores, and this 1987 example is for sale at Bring a Trailer with just 86k miles on the odometer.

Under the hood sits BMW’s venerable S38 six-cylinder engine, featuring individual throttle body injection which bumped the horsepower up to 256 ponies, and 243 lb-ft of torque. With a five-speed manual transmission and a 3.91 final drive ratio, the big Bimmer is suitably zippy despite its 3,598-pound (1,632 kg) weight and can hit 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) in 5.8 seconds. The seller included a video where we can hear that magnificent straight-six symphony.
Instead of the original wheels and tires, the seller has equipped this M6 with a set of 17-inch BBS alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires, which should improve the handling even more. Moreover, the shine of the rims matches nicely with the royal blue metallic with beige pinstripes.
Inside the M6, the seats are trimmed in a fabulous shade of tan leather and there’s an M-Tech I steering wheel. There aren’t many toys to play with, which is unsurprising given the car’s age. Nevertheless, there’s air conditioning, power windows, an onboard computer, and a factory-installed cassette stereo.
This wonderful example of a BMW thoroughbred has attracted a highest bid of $25,000 at the time of writing, with one day left in the auction.
