Electrify America announced this week that it provided 1.45 million charging sessions to owners of fully-electric vehicles in 2021. In 2020, by contract, it provided just 268,000 EV charging sessions.

The company said that in 2021, those 1.45 million charging sessions allowed EVs to travel an estimated 145 million miles (233 million km), saving 5.7 million gallons (21.5 million liters) of gas in the process. In all, it delivered more than 41.1 GWh of energy to its customers.

The announcement is a signal of both how quickly the company’s charging infrastructure is growing and how quickly demand is growing, according to Robert Barrosa, the senior director of business development and marketing at Electrify America.

“The combination of our rapidly expanding charging network, plus the growth and availability of all-new electric vehicles, is accelerating the transition to eMobility,” said Barrosa. “Electrify America is working with automotive manufacturers to smooth the transition from gas to electric by offering integrated access on the Electrify America network.”

The EV charging infrastructure company operates more than 800 EV charging stations around America today, which have more than 3,500 individual chargers between them. That makes it the largest, open ultra-fast DC charging network in the U.S., though Tesla‘s network is larger, and its stations can recharge vehicles at up to 350 kW. By 2026, Electrify America aims to have more than 1,800 stations and 10,000 chargers open across the U.S. and Canada.

“More and more commuters are discovering the benefits of electric vehicle transportation as seen in the remarkable growth of charging sessions at our stations,” said Barrosa. “We are seeing this positively impact vehicle adoption as first-quarter battery electric vehicle sales reached a record 5.2% market share of new vehicle sales in the US.”
