If you’re a fan of Chris Harris, you’ll know that he has never thought much of the Lamborghini Huracan and repeatedly criticized it for its understeer. As the veteran journalist recently discovered when testing out the Huracan STO, however, it differs from the rest of the range.
One could be fooled into thinking the Huracan STO is simply an amped-up version of the Performante with some updated styling but it is much more than that.
Most notably, the STO ditches the standard all-wheel drive system of the supercar and is instead sold exclusively in rear-wheel drive configuration. Harris mentions that while there are other rear-wheel drive Huracans available, they feel somewhat disconnected and aren’t all that much sharper than the regular model.

The STO is a very different beast. Harris says that when driven on the track, everything about the STO feels absolutely glorious. He adds that it feels instinctive and intuitive. When hustled through some of the high-speed corners of the Silverstone circuit, you can also feel the aerodynamics doing their business and sticking the car to the pavement.
Then there’s the engine. Powering the Huracan STO is a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 pumping out 631 hp and 417 lb-ft (565 Nm) of torque. This engine is widely regarded as one of the finest found in any production car and is made all the more special by the fact that most of its rivals other than the much cheaper Porsche 911 GT3 have gone down the forced induction route.
Harris concludes that the STO is blown away by some of its rivals when it comes to performance, in particular the McLaren 765LT. However, this is a car that’s about much more than numbers and when it comes to driver enjoyment, it offers something that none of its rivals can quite match. The Top Gear host is so fond of it that he says it is probably the best Lamborghini he has ever driven.
