More than 5,300 examples of the Volvo XC40 Recharge are being recalled in the United States.
The Swedish car manufacturer has revealed that XC40 BEV models produced between September 8, 2020 and August 13, 2021 have been equipped with a faulty left wheelhouse harness. The recall notice states that water may enter the cable harness and reach the accelerator pedal. Were this to happen, water could cause corrosion in the internal circuits of the accelerator pedal and corrupt the signals from the pedal.
Volvo says that owners of impacted models may experience unintended acceleration, no acceleration, or the loss of drive or inability to start the electric SUV. The car manufacturer has added that impacted vehicles have a built-in safety function that is activated when receiving faulty signals that reduces acceleration and ensures the vehicle is still controllable.

A total of 5,381 examples of the 2021 and 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge are involved in the recall.
Volvo was first alerted to the possibility of a problem in the first quarter of 2022 when it started to receive reports of different issues with accelerator pedal behavior.
Owners of impacted XC40 Recharge models are being encouraged to take their vehicle to a local dealership where it will be inspected for corrosion and the harness will be replaced. A “capillary breaking splice” will also be installed to stop any risk of water intrusion. Dealerships were notified of the recall on April 28 while customers will be notified on June 20.
