Mitsubishi has issued a recall impacting 2,865 Outlander models across the United States.

A recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that impacted models may have a bearing plate in the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) that was produced out of specification due to the inappropriate maintenance of an injection mold die at a component supplier. This issue means the ALR function may deactivate before the webbing of the seat belt is fully retracted.

The recall impacts 2022 Outlander models that were produced between February 2, 2022 and March 2, 2022. The issue does not affect the driver’s seat but does impact the front passenger seat, second-row left-side seat, and the second-row right-side seat.

Mitsubishi became aware of a potential issue in late February 2022 when it discovered an ALR functionality performance issue with certain seat belts on two Outlander models built at its Okazaki plant in Japan. The following month, a further two Outlanders were found to have the same issue. The supplier, Autoliv Japan, then began investigating through March and April before delivering its findings to Mitsubishi.

The Japanese car manufacturer is not aware of any warranty claims or field reports related to the issue.

Both dealerships and customers will be notified of the recall in June. If a customer-owned vehicle is found to have seat belt assemblies manufactured within specific lot numbers with a potentially out-of-specification bearing plate, new seat belt assemblies will be installed at no cost. Owners who have already paid to have the issue fixed can apply for a refund through the Mitsubishi Customer Relations Department.
