The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is inching closer to production as GM President Mark Reuss has revealed prototypes are conducting “final testing validation work out on the trails” of Moab, Utah.

In a LinkedIn post, the executive released a handful of photos showing the SUV tackling steep grades, rocky steps, and mountainous terrain.

Previewed by a near-production concept last year, the model follows in the footsteps of the pickup but is 20 inches (508 mm) shorter and features an enclosed cargo area as well as a unique rear bumper. The SUV also sports a power swing-out tailgate with a full-size spare tire.

Thanks to its smaller dimensions and remarkable 4 Wheel Steer system, the SUV should be even more capable off-road as it features a 35.4 foot (10.8 meter) turning circle, which is tighter than some versions of the Chevrolet Sonic. The model also offers an adaptive air suspension, a CrabWalk function, and 22-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires.

However, if you really want to venture off the beaten path, you’ll want to opt for the Extreme Off-Road Package. It adds rock sliders and underbody armor as well as an UltraVision camera system that offers 17 different views. They’re joined by heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts, a front eLocker, virtual rear lockers, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

The interior largely carries over from the truck as drivers will find a rugged aesthetic as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch infotainment system. The biggest change is the rear cargo area, which provides up to 81.8 cubic feet (2,316 liters) of luggage space.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV will go into production early next year and be launched in range-topping Edition 1 guise. The $105,595 variant features a tri-motor powertrain that produces an estimated 830 hp (619 kW / 842 PS) and enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 3.5 seconds. The company also expects the off-roader to have a range in excess of 300 miles (483 km).

The Edition 1 will be followed by a $99,995 EV3X and $89,995 EV3X variant in the spring of 2023.  The former is largely identical to the Edition 1, while the latter is slated to have 300+ miles (483+ km) of range as well as a dual motor powertrain developing up to 625 hp (466 kW / 634 PS). Customers will also be able to opt for an EV2 variant, which will arrive in 2024 with 250+ miles (402+ km) of range and an estimated MSRP of $79,995.
