The Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 hybrid WRC racer might be the quickest but it’s not the only rallycar coming from Gazoo Racing, since there is also the Toyota GR Starlet that recently debuted in South Africa.
The GR Starlet is based on the previous-generation Toyota Glanza which is a sister model to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, and not the latest model that was unveiled a few months ago.

Toyota Gazoo Racing hasn’t published high-res photos of the GR Starlet, but from the available material we can see the wide bodykit and the Gazoo Racing livery. Visual modifications include front and rear fender add-ons, a vented bonnet, a roof scoop, and a large rear spoiler. Inside, the cabin has been stripped down to the basics, with the addition of an FIA-approved roll-cage and safety kit.
Predictably, the rallycar has little in common with the road-going models in terms of chassis setup and powertrain. Under the bonnet lies a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with a Motec ECU. Toyota didn’t give us numbers but local media suggest that the mill is expected to produce well over 200 hp. Power is sent to all four wheels through an AWD system and a sequential gearbox. The GR Starlet also gets Reiger dampers, Alcon brakes, and racing wheels, making sure it gets maximum performance on difficult terrains.
The Toyota GR Starlet made its racing debut at the Cape Overberg Rally in South Africa with former South African National Rally champions, Guy Botterill (driver) and Simon Vacy-Lyle (co-driver). The next scheduled event is the Secunda Rally.
